We are bombarded by the media, and by other people’s ideas, about the ideal way to be. How we should live and what we have a right to expect is continually surrounding us through advertisements. This is because someone has an agenda and usually wants to sell us something. The subliminal messages are subtle, persuasive and persistent.
The best place to start is with goal setting. If you can set goals to reduce your energy consumption of gas, electricity, and the gallons of fuel used for you car, you can save tons of energy and reduce your monthly bill. Each month we can continue to use less and less energy, while saving more money, and creating a more sustainable community.
In many countries tax breaks or credits are available for those who install sustainable energy electricity generation equipment. In the USA, the government and IRS have issued tax breaks or credits for DIY home solar panels for years as an incentive to reduce bulk energy consumption and focus people on energy company sources. No doubt these incentives will increase as the need to move away from carbon intensive forms of electricity generation increase.
Brazil is considered a leader in alternative energy. A vast amount of its electricity is produced through hydropower and much of the vehicle transportation has been converted to ethanol fuel, a biomass product produced from sugar cane. With the transformation, Brazil is now an exporter of oil instead of an importer despite the fact it has nominal oil reserves.
Using water for power makes a lot of sense. You don’t have to go through the risky process of compressing highly flammable hydrogen into tanks when nature has done it for you. Hydrogen is naturally and safely compressed in water – without you having to do anything.
Wind power, on the other hand, can be used by many more regions. There is virtually no where on Earth that doesn’t get wind at some time. The downside to this form of energy is that you need a wind turbine to generate electricity which can take up quite a bit of space.
The major oil companies don’t want you to know all this. Their profits depend upon it. But you can get ahead of the game. Convert your car to hydropower and you reduce your carbon footprint, help the environment – oh and you save money!
